Subject Description
INDS150 is an introductory subject to the Indigenous Studies Major. In this subject students will gain an understanding of the diversity of Australian Indigenous peoples, cultures and societies and the impact of colonisation. A central focus of the course is the ongoing results of the colonial process. On-line content and seminars provide local and international students with an introduction to the policies and practices that continue to affect Australian Indigenous people and communities. The subject also explores Australian Indigenous people’s political movements from first contact to contemporary times.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal agency from 1788 to contemporary times.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ongoing impact of historical, political and social change on Australian Indigenous peoples.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of racism and how it shapes the experiences of Australian Indigenous people.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of Australian Indigenous people’s scholarly works.
