Subject Description
This unit introduces students to theories of new media design from analogue to digital (including web and interactive multimedia). Students are directed to research resources on the history and theory of the topics covered, including: the genealogy of key analogue and digital imaging theories; critical thinking methods for investigating new media design products in their social, cultural and political contexts; the impact of technological convergence on designing the post-human; digital animation and cinema; critical writings on web and multimedia design; the interdependency of new media on visual communications strategies; recent digital design movements and theorists; globalization and digital design.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Gain a comprehension of the critical and cultural theories that address the development, practice and reception of new media
2. Gained competency in presenting coursework research material to peer groups
3. Increased competency in research procedures leading to the successful writing of an essay
