Subject Description
This subject extends students' experience in news and feature writing to critical media investigation of community issues. The subject will both present and analyse a range of case-studies of successful investigative stories as well as introduce students to the range of skills to produce similar stories. It includes a series of practical lectures and workshops on a range of topics, including using traditional resources to background stories, utilising the regulators (ASIC, ACCC, APRA), extracting information from government departments using FOI and other strategies. The subject will cover a range of investigative and research techniques; story composition; statistical interpretation; and media law and ethics. It will also explore the emerging area of data journalism using large public data sets and data visualisation as an effective form of investigative journalism.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Identify, analyse and articulate the role of investigative journalism and its historic and current effect on democratic institutions
2. Identify analyse and articulate investigative-oriented story angles in current community events and issues
3. Conduct independent research and enquiries into community issues using an appropriate mix of secondary data acquisition and analysis and original interviews
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the range of ways that data and data sets can be used and presented in investigative journalism
5. Research and produce an investigative story which appeals to a general readership and supports its argument with a range of evidence, including both strong original interview material and secondary data analysis
