Subject Description
Using real-life case studies and examples the subject will explore a range of topics, including, but not limited to: media effects; media histories; freedom of expression, freedom of information and censorship; media models; readability; media economics; media ethics; media crises; war, terrorism and international relations; domestic politics; sport; health; finance and the economy; industrial relations; police and courts; the environment; media and public relations; technological change; science; disability; multiculturalism and indigenous issues; religion; elections; natural disasters; human rights and the future of journalism. Students will undertake a series of in-depth investigations of their own that will provide them with an enhanced understanding of these topics, via the presentations they will be required to give to their colleagues.

Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Identify, analyse and articulate a range of current issues in journalism practice and theory
2. Identify, analyse and articulate the contributions that journalists make to animating democracy and engaging and educating their communities
3. Identify, analyse and articulate the range of ethical constraints under which professional journalists operate
4. Demonstrate strong research skills in the area of journalism studies and the application of theoretical constructs to an analysis of journalism practice
5. Identify, analyse and articulate the way that professional journalism fits into an evolving set of other professional and community storytelling and educational practices
