Subject Description
This subject focuses on written storytelling techniques for print and online media, with consideration given to ethical and legal restraints. Topics covered include: in-depth interviewing; feature story introductions; feature story structures; dialogue and characterisation; scene descriptions; online and conventional research; developing concepts; clear, correct writing. Different feature forms such as profiles; news/background features; issue-based features; how-to features; obituary features; and opinion essays will be covered.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. identify a good subject for an in-depth interview
2. conduct an in-depth interview using appropriate techniques, illustrated in the course
3. craft and collate an interview with other research into a written ‘Profile’ feature
4. understand the basic principles of writing feature length stories
5. identify feature-oriented stories in news events/issues
6. present a feature story which appeals to general readership
7. observe ethical, legal and behavioural constraints
